On a bi-monthly basis, foodies, music lovers and explorers connect in a setting that embraces African cuisine, music and décor. This social dining experience is called Mokete, a Sotho word which means a celebration where everyone is invited to feast, sing and dance. The next Mokete takes place on 26 November 2017 at Takenaki Lapa, an open and rustic hideout just North of Pretoria (a stone’s throw away from Wonderboom Airport).
Guests will feast on a scrumptious three-course meal, a combination of traditional and contemporary dishes, while enjoying great tunes and mingling. Mokete Co-founder, Tebogo Mphane, indicates that this will be the last Mokete of the year, so guests should expect a festive mood with great food and music. “Our theme is for this upcoming Mokete is ‘The Festive Feast’ so our culinary team, led by Chef Naledi and I, will be preparing a selection of flame-grilled meats and fresh summer salads with all the trimmings.”
The event takes place on a Sunday at noon. Guests are offered welcome snacks on arrival and ushered to the ‘Beer Garden’ to mingle. The ‘Beer Garden’ offers a variety of indigenous board-games to encourage interaction among guests before serving starters. Guests are then invited to sit at a long decked-out table where the main course is served. Dessert is typically served outside at the ‘Beer Garden’ while enjoying live performances and music by DJs who play a mix of African and worldly tunes. The celebration continues into the evening with guests sitting around the bonfire.
“We borrow from township, urban and rural cultures to create a multi-layered experience expressed from an African perspective. We create a space which celebrates us Africans by placing elements we associate with our heritage in the forefront,” Tebogo concludes.
