“They say if you dream a thing more than once, it’s sure to come true.” ~ Aurora
A classic fairytale of evil defeated and love triumphant, Joburg Ballet opens its 2019 season with a new production of The Sleeping Beauty, staged by former British ballerina Maina Gielgud, at the Joburg Theatre. Set to Tchaikovsky’s sweeping romantic score, played live by the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, this production returns to Joburg Ballet’s repertoire after an absence of eight years.
Through an evil spell cast by the wicked fairy Carabosse, Princess Aurora pricks her finger and falls into a deep sleep for 100 years, but it takes just one kiss from her Prince to guarantee a happy-ever-after ending for this bewitching ballet.
Joburg Ballet will be joined by Anaïs Chalendard, principal dancer with Boston Ballet and Florimond Lorieux, soloist with Paris Opera Ballet, for several performances during the season.
Dates: Friday 29 March to Sunday 7 April
Venue: Joburg Theatre, Braamfontein (GPS -26.191316, 28.038519)
Tickets: Available at Webtickets
