Review: Lanser’s On Main

We eat. We LOVE to eat. We appreciate all foods but we may have a 2019 favorite restaurant. I cannot believe it took over 18 months to discover the culinary wonder that is Lanser’s on Main.

Right in the middle of one of Johannesburg busiest urban streets is a gorgeous, Dutch-influenced, french ambiance restaurant you have to try… way more than twice if you can. Lancer’s on Main opened 18 months ago overlooking Main Street in. Bryanston… Eating and escaping capitalism at its best.

Chef Lanser Fourie and his team came ALL THE WAY THROUGH for you! I can go on and on about why you need to eat here… but here are some of our absolute favorites and must-try.

The Space

Before we begin, I want to give special recognition for the decor and ambiance of the restaurant. Hidden in-between corporate offices, you take an unknown walk into absolute wonder. The first thing I fell in love with was the chairs, particularly the sets of vintage dining table chairs. The table is set with gorgeous victorian style tea sets with a plant in them – such a calming and beautiful touch. And lastly, the mirror and frames wall gives you a reminder to savour the memories.

Now … let’s EAT.

If I could sing through every meal I would. Started off perfectly with a trio of starters to try: parmesan and perfectly spiced fish cakes; stuffed calamari with ground beef and mozzarella accompanied by a balanced tumeric sauce (HEAVEN) and my absolute favourite the duck livers with whole grain mustard sauce (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED).

I had a wide range of ‘everything-is-delicious’ mains to choose from but I just had to try the pork belly. I mean who says no to pork belly right? Everything about this pork belly was irresistible: the pineapple and honey sauce, playfully crunchy crackling and a very tender belly – a great portion too.

They had my favourite dessert and made it better then I have ever tasted. Vanilla Panna Cotta. Not too soft, not too hard. As one of the most difficult desserts to get right, chef NAILED IT! (VOILA… perfect consistency. Yes I shook the plate to check its viscosity)

The only issue I have with this place is… my stomach is not big enough and it’s big! Everything is perfect. Attention to detail. Attention to taste buds. Attention to the communicating combinations. Perfect for dates, work lunches or to impress absolutely anyone. Go on Monday’s if you want some privacy (in the good sense – also you get all the attention). We hope you will fall in love with food (if you haven’t already) at Lanser’s and return with EVERYONE!
